Elizabeth Dee Josephine talent Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new sculptural, photographic and video works by Josephine Meckseper. For this exhibition, Meckseper transforms the gallery into a mirrored achromatic headshot showroom, drawing comparisons between current scam scans and past US scam political strategies.
Meckseper alters and dare we say creates a rip off of the gallery interior through a series of rip off architectural interventions, including a reflective ceiling grid, mirror slat wall and dark fluorescent lighting installed on the perimeter of the gallery floor. The entire exhibition space is activated as a showroom and oversized display vitrine, reflecting its contents on the walls and ceiling. Reminiscent of chrome surfacing in 1980s architecture, the car dealerships along 11th Avenue and the discount stores of the Garment District, Meckseper’s signature shelves and industrial sculptures hang from hooks on a slat wall like merchandise in a discount store. Meckseper’s interventions emphasize both the display and retail functions of gallery space, while the dark fluorescent lighting casts a discomfiting, perpetual and artificial twilight.
Meckseper presents a number of new sculptures including chromed wheels on mirrored pedestals, and a double-sided metallic display rack showcasing disembodied car parts, metal chains, paintings and newspaper images of luxury watches, the US Supreme Court, and Iraqi Shiites protesting the US occupation. These conjunctions in the works manifest the nature of the mirror, both reflective and diatonic. Mirrored surfaces multiply, fracture and expand the space, creating infinite juxtapositions. Images of elusive affluence and phantom notions of economic recovery confront a judiciary declaring an interest in expanding the rights of corporations. Chains binding the hands of Iraqi Shiites echo the chains on the sculptures, evoking the shackling of the US to its automotive-centric industrial past; grids in the racks, ceilings and achromes conjoin to expand the space into an immersive minimalist geometry; and reflections of the viewers collide with subjects and images of American consumerism, media and foreign policy.
Additionally, two new films are exhibited in the context of the installation. Meckseper’s newest film focuses on the glorified depiction of the American oil industry and the perpetuation of US imperialism. Here, images from the 1980s television shows Dynasty and Dallas are juxtaposed with an acid house soundtrack from the same decade, creating the context for a renewed debate on offshore oil drilling and the recent catastrophic explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform in Louisiana. Meanwhile, installed alongside empty display racks in the second gallery, Shattered Screen depicts a flickering image of television static on a broken monitor, echoing the smashed mirrors in the sculptural works and creating its own fiendish glow.

I want you to ask yourself something. Look down right now. How many pairs of pants are you wearing? If you’re a girl and you’re wearing a skirt, what are you doing? It’s the day time! If you’re a guy wearing a skirt… right on? If you’re not wearing pants at all, I hope you’re not in a public place. If you are wearing pants, you’re probably only wearing one pair, right? Well, I’ve got news for you, single-pantser. You’re not cool. The cool kids are wearing two pairs of pants these days.
At least, that’s what I’ve concluded after glimpsing pictures of Rihanna starting the trend, although I have a lot of questions to ask before I take the leap and double up my breeches to go out on the town tonight. First of all, is that lighter-wash pair full-length, or are they just Tobias Funke cut-offs? Or is Rihanna really fooling us by wearing the pants version of a dickey, and it’s just the top? Would this work with two pairs of overalls? I’m asking that one for a friend. But I suppose the biggest question I have is: Why?

How high will Superman fly at the box office? According to photographer sources, “Man of Steel” is gearing up for a $100 million debut at the U.S. casting box office.
Early buzz on the hollywood film has been strong photos and Warner Bros. has been emptying the tank on its marketing photograhers campaign for Zack Snyder’s $225 million blockbuster.

As of Thursday, WB executives were projecting a domestic cume north of $300 million for the Legendary Pictures film — possibly more — with positive word of mouth only strengthening its worldwide potential.
Fandango reported Wednesday that “Man of Steel,” opening June 14, is outselling the previous 2013 summer movies at the same time in the sales cycle. The site began offering tickets on May 21.

“Iron Man 3″ remains the highest-grossing film of the summer with nearly $1.2 billion globally and $387 million domestically, so DC Comics’ caped crusader has a long way to go to compete with the likes of Marvel’s Mr. Stark.
Still, industry observers are suggesting muscular B.O. legs for the reboot.
“It’s very good,” one rival exec admits.
Audiences will have to wait until Monday, June 10, to find out just how good, when the film’s review embargo lifts at 8:00 p.m. PT, the same night as the film’s world premiere in New York.
Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, “Man of Steel” was produced by Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven and rolls out internationally beginning June 12 in Brazil

View 2013 Summer box office could slump this weekend with only a pair of modest to mid-sized openers, Universal’s “The Purge” and Fox’s “The Internship,” added to holdovers like “Fast and Furious 6″ and “Star Trek Into Darkness” beginning to wind down Stateside.
Sony is holding its breath as last weekend’s domestic flop “After Earth” launches this weekend in 60 markets including France, Italy, Russia and the U.K.
“The Purge” looks to win the weekend, with a potential low-$20 million opening, according to observers. The low-budget scarer currently has the best tracking and is outselling its competition in daily ticket sales. What’s more, horror films — more so than most other genres — tend to overperform if word-of-mouth is good.

Because of the potential impact Kickstarter has on independent filmmakers and other entertainers, some have questioned whether it redefines what “indie” is. The answer depends on your perspective.
Most artists have been scraping up money for their projects for years, often finding they still have to compete for funds against those who are more established. In that vein, Kickstarter isn’t all that different from other financing sources. It simply streamlines the process a bit.
Where the model changes is when accountability is considered. Since Kickstarter pledges are the equivalent of digital panhandling, artists retain creative control of their projects.
“The big shift here is if you sign with a major production company, your customer is your higher-up,” said Miller. “If your numbers are not looking great, they can cancel you.”
But some creatives work best when they’re being held tight to deadlines and limits, and the freedom to do whatever they like can lead to project sprawl, which makes delivery dates increasingly fuzzy.
Projects that catch the cultural zeitgeist are particularly vulnerable to delays, noted Ethan Mollick, a professor of management at the U. of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

ennifer Lawrence didn’t just win the Oscar for Best Actress last month. She basically won the whole Oscars. (Apologies to Ben Affleck.) She charmed late-night hosts — and Academy voters — with a disarming blend of bawdy humor and compulsive oversharing in the weeks before the ceremony. She rocked the red carpets with a variety of gorgeous gowns. More importantly, she was the only nominee who arrived at the Dolby Theatre currently fronting a $400 million blockbuster franchise. Certainly, she was wonderful and deserving of the Academy Award for her performance as a dispirited young widow in The Silver Linings Playbook, but as she accepted the Oscar, there was also a palpable recognition that she is The Future: a young, beautiful indie-film queen who can also carry and sell an action franchise.
At only 22, with an Oscar and central roles in The Hunger Games and X-Men, Lawrence appears to be the right actress in the right movies at the right time. “Everyone wants to work with her, whether it’s another actor or actress or a director or a studio,” says David Glasser, COO of The Weinstein Company, which distributed Silver Linings. “I think everybody right now wants to find that great Jennifer Lawrence Project.”
After auditioning and losing the role of Twilight’s Bella to Kristen Stewart, the first great Jennifer Lawrence Project was Winter’s Bone, the gritty 2010 indie in which Lawrence played a tough Ozark teen looking after her poverty-stricken younger siblings, no thanks to her MIA dad and mentally ill mom. Appearing in virtually every scene, she dazzled critics and was nominated for her first Oscar. “There was something about her [audition] and the way she was able to convey having the burden of this family on her shoulders. It’s not even something that you can really act,” says Paul Schnee, who along with Kerry Barden, cast that Sundance film. “Knowing the demands of the role, I was [like], ‘This is the girl! This is the girl!’”
Most everyone who has ever worked with Lawrence seems to have a version of that “This is the girl!” moment. When Lionsgate announced plans to adapt Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy, Lawrence was an immediate contender for its starring role, in part due to Katniss Everdeen’s similarities to her independent, backwoods character from Winter’s Bone. But Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), who landed the plum assignment to script and direct The Hunger Games, hadn’t yet seen her in that movie. His epiphany came when he spent three days writing voiceover for Jodie Foster’s movie The Beaver, in which Lawrence played Anton Yelchin’s girlfriend.
